DEDICATION

FOOD - simply stated, we can't live without it. Moving beyond the obvious, it is the quintessential symbol of sustenance and nurture. When we think of the cooks, the "food givers" in our lives, it takes on an even deeper meaning. They cater not just to our bodies and our palettes, but to our hearts and souls as well.

In my home country, India, food is the centerpiece of every life event, from birth to death. Here, family cooks gather in the kitchen sharing culinary tips along with confidences; and serve up their creations laced with love, laughter and maternal advice. As sexist as this may sound, those of us who grew up on this soil cannot think of food without conjuring up memories of grandmothers, mothers and aunts who have cooked us many a tasty meal and shared with us many a secret recipe.  Their influence extended much beyond the realm of food into being the guiding forces in our lives.

This blog is dedicated to my mother, Sarasa Rangaswami, the ultimate guiding force in my life, who has taught me how to lead life with purpose and determination, and leave it with courage and grace. Those of us who have been blessed to be part of her circle of family and friends were constantly inundated with her culinary creations, in abundant portions heaped on to our plates. I believe that  I owe what I am today to the nourishment she provided, which consisted of a lot more than mere ingredients in the pantry.

Amma, I hope you are smiling down at this blog and sending us good vibrations to lend potency to these recipes!
